MAGPIE GALLERY

The complexities of transforming a drawinginto a design, transferring it onto a lino-tile, then hand-carving and printingit, have always captured my creative passions.  The whole complex process is also very labour intensive when done traditionally "by hand", but it is extremely rewarding.

Regularly people tell me they have put aside the medium of print making as "something I did at school" then forgotten as other mediums captured their interest as "real art".  Print making, however, is a medium that can be used on many different levels, from simple black and white images to complex ones of overlaying designs using different coloured inks and washes. The medium is only limited by an artist's willingness to push its boundaries.

I love to give myself a break from the "hard edge" designs mostly produced with lino-cuts by exploring acrylic paint on canvas and mixed media with collage.  However I always come back to lino-prints as I enjoy the simplicity of the lines and designs I create.  Interestingly, I do not anticipate a perfect image but one that captures the essence of my subject and this I am often told sets my prints and artwork apart.

I produce my designs using water-based inks rather than the more common oil-based ones as I find I get a "good opaque black".  They are also easier to clean up and do not have the "chemical base" of oils.  I use good quality printing papers from transparent rice-papers to up to 320 gsm, acid free, printing papers as I believe after spending so many hours on the creative process, the final result deserves a quality base.  The prints are "limited editions" that are numbered, titled and signed by me, the artist, in pencil below the printed image.  Each print is packaged with foam core for support and covered with cellophane.
